Grade Calculator
Add assignment, test or category scores with their percentage weights to calculate a weighted course grade. You can also enter a target overall grade and final-exam weight to estimate the final score you need.
How to use the Grade Calculator
- Enter each completed score as a percentage.
- Enter the percentage weight assigned to that score or grading category.
- Add additional rows when needed.
- The current weighted grade is calculated from the entered scores and weights.
- Enter your target overall grade and the percentage weight of the final exam.
- The calculator solves the weighted-average equation for the final-exam score required to reach the target.
- Always compare the result with your course syllabus because grading, rounding and weighting policies differ.
Examples
Weighted contribution
A score of 90% on work worth 20% of the course contributes 18 percentage points toward the final course grade.
Current grade
If three categories have scores of 80%, 90% and 100% with equal weights, their average is 90%.
Final exam planning
If completed coursework represents 80% of the course and the final exam represents 20%, the final exam can significantly raise or lower the overall result.
Impossible target
If the required final-exam result is above 100%, the selected target cannot be reached under the entered assumptions without extra credit or another grading adjustment.
Frequently asked questions
How do weighted grades work?
Each grade contributes according to its assigned percentage weight. A 90% score worth 20% contributes 18 percentage points to the overall grade.
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
Subtract the contribution of completed coursework from your target course total, then divide the remaining percentage points by the final exam weight.
Do all grade weights need to add to 100%?
The full course grading plan normally totals 100%. For a current-grade calculation, you may enter only completed work, but final-grade planning should use the actual weights from your course.
Can a required final grade be over 100%?
Yes. That means the target overall grade is not reachable using the entered current grade and final-exam weight unless extra credit or another adjustment is available.
Do schools use the same grading rules?
No. Letter-grade cutoffs, rounding rules, weighting policies and extra-credit rules can vary by school, program and instructor.
