Cumulative GPA
How to use the GPA Calculator
- Choose the letter grade earned or expected for each course.
- Enter the credit hours for that course.
- The calculator converts each letter grade to a standard grade-point value.
- Grade points are multiplied by course credits to obtain quality points.
- Total quality points are divided by total credits to calculate term GPA.
- For cumulative GPA, previous GPA is multiplied by previous completed credits and combined with the new term quality points.
- Check your institution's official grading policy because GPA scales and repeated-course rules can differ.
Examples
A in a 3-credit course
On a 4.0 scale, an A worth 4.0 grade points in a 3-credit course contributes 12 quality points.
B+ in a 3-credit course
Using 3.3 points for B+, a 3-credit B+ course contributes 9.9 quality points.
Credit weighting matters
A grade in a 4-credit course affects GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course because GPA is credit-weighted.
Cumulative GPA
A cumulative GPA calculation must include both the old GPA and the number of credits represented by that GPA.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade-point value by its credits, add all quality points and divide by the total attempted credits included in the calculation.
What GPA scale does this calculator use?
It uses a common unweighted 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades. A+ and A are treated as 4.0 in this calculator.
What is cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA combines quality points and credits from multiple academic terms rather than calculating only the current semester.
Can my school use a different GPA scale?
Yes. Some institutions use different plus/minus values, weighted scales, repeated-course rules or maximum GPA values.
Does this calculator replace my official transcript GPA?
No. It is an estimate based on the values you enter. Your school's registrar or official academic record determines your official GPA.
