IFTA Quarter Calculator

Estimate an IFTA quarter using distance traveled, tax-paid fuel purchased and the applicable tax rate for each jurisdiction. Tax rates are intentionally entered by the user rather than permanently hardcoded because official IFTA rates change by quarter and jurisdiction.

Enter the official tax rate applicable to each jurisdiction for 2026 Q3. Rates are not hardcoded because IFTA rates change by quarter.

How to use the IFTA Quarter Calculator

  1. Choose miles/gallons or kilometres/litres.
  2. Enter total distance traveled in each jurisdiction.
  3. Enter tax-paid fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
  4. Enter the official applicable tax rate for that jurisdiction and filing quarter.
  5. The calculator determines fleet fuel efficiency from total distance divided by total fuel.
  6. It estimates taxable fuel used in each jurisdiction and compares tax required with tax credited through tax-paid fuel purchases.
  7. Positive net amounts indicate estimated tax due while negative amounts indicate a potential credit before other adjustments.

Examples

Jurisdiction calculation

If fleet efficiency is 6 miles per gallon and 600 miles were traveled in a jurisdiction, estimated taxable fuel is 100 gallons before applying the jurisdiction tax rate.

Tax credit

Fuel tax already paid through qualifying purchases may offset tax calculated from taxable fuel use.

Frequently asked questions

What is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement simplifies reporting of motor-fuel taxes for qualified commercial vehicles operating across participating jurisdictions.

Does the calculator contain official tax rates?

No. Rates change by quarter and jurisdiction, so the applicable official rate should be entered for each row.

How is fleet fuel efficiency calculated?

The simplified calculation divides total distance by total fuel for the reporting period.

What does a negative net result mean?

It may indicate a potential fuel-tax credit in the simplified calculation, subject to official filing rules and adjustments.

Can I file my IFTA return using only this result?

No. Verify official rates, taxable distances, fuel documentation, surcharges, exemptions and your base-jurisdiction filing requirements.

Can Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions be entered?

Yes, provided distances, fuel units and tax rates are entered consistently for the selected measurement system and filing requirements.
