Fuel Surcharge Calculator

Calculate fuel surcharge per mile and total fuel surcharge for a trucking or freight shipment. Enter the current diesel or contract fuel index, the agreed base fuel price, truck MPG factor and billable miles. The tool also compares fuel surcharge with linehaul revenue.

Fuel price above base$3/gal
Fuel surcharge per mile$0.462/mi
Total fuel surcharge$461.54
Surcharge vs. linehaul18.46%
Linehaul + fuel$2,961.54
Formula: (current fuel price − base fuel price) ÷ MPG = surcharge per mile.
Important: This calculator does not supply a live government or carrier fuel index. Enter the index specified in your contract, tariff, customer agreement or rate confirmation. Carriers may use different base prices, MPG factors, weekly indexes, percentage schedules or minimum rules.

How to use the Fuel Surcharge Calculator

  1. Enter the current diesel price or fuel index used by your agreement.
  2. Enter the base fuel price specified in the rate, tariff or customer contract.
  3. Enter the MPG factor used for the surcharge calculation.
  4. The difference between current fuel and base fuel is divided by MPG to calculate surcharge per mile.
  5. The per-mile surcharge is multiplied by billable miles to estimate total fuel surcharge.

Examples

Example FSC

If current fuel is $4.25 per gallon, base fuel is $1.25 and the MPG factor is 6.5, the fuel surcharge is approximately $0.462 per mile.

1,000 billable miles

At approximately $0.462 per mile, 1,000 billable miles produces about $461.54 in fuel surcharge.

Fuel below the base

This calculator does not produce a negative surcharge when the entered fuel price is below the base price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the trucking fuel surcharge formula?

A common per-mile method is current fuel price minus base fuel price, divided by the agreed MPG factor.

Where do I get the current fuel price?

Use the diesel index, carrier schedule or fuel price required by your customer agreement, tariff, contract or rate confirmation.

Do all carriers calculate fuel surcharge the same way?

No. Carriers and contracts may use different base prices, MPG assumptions, government indexes, percentage tables, minimums or regional fuel schedules.

Is fuel surcharge part of linehaul?

Fuel surcharge is commonly shown as a separate charge added to the base linehaul, although individual contracts may structure pricing differently.
